Music

Intent

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Our Music curriculum draws upon a range of knowledge and skills to be applied and performed. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Music. They should also know how music both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Implementation

We implement our music curriculum using 'Charanga'. This scheme of learning allows us to meet the expectations of the new music model curriculum. The MMC aims to support all pupils in their musical progression through the Key Stages. By offering a rich and varied musical framework that nurtures fundamental musical techniques alongside building musical knowledge, it offers a clear pathway towards mature musical understanding.

Our music curriculum develops the disciplinary knowledge of the outlined areas of music.

Musicianship        Listening      Singing     Notation       Playing instruments       Improvising        Composition         Performance

Music is taught in blocks throughout each topic within the year to allow children to focus on the content in more depth and build on their skills.

Extra-curricular

As music is so highly valued at Hill Top, many pupils engage with extra-curricular opportunities. These include choir and guitar club. Pupils perform within the local community frequently throughout the year.
