French

Intent

Our intent at Hill Top is to enhance the quality of education through the further development of a rich and ambitious French curriculum that enables all learners to achieve their full potential. We intend that children should master  French to such an extent that they can go on to have careers within Languages and make use of languages effectively in their everyday lives. Our children will be taught French in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. Our children will gain experience and skills in different areas of languages in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities, enabling them to use languages across a range of subjects to be creative and solve problems, ensuring they make progress. Using the national curriculum it is our intention that pupils.

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding;
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words;
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help;
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures;
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases;
  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences;
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing;
  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language;
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary;
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly;
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing;
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Implementation

We follow a broad and balanced  French curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. We follow a  scheme of learning that ensures a progression of skills and covers all aspects of the  curriculum.

Each skill is augmented year on year to ensure a clear progression. In oracy for example, children in Year 3 begin learning to speak in short phrases or sentences, moving onto being able to hold full conversations in Year 5 and finally being able to express and give reasons for their opinions in Year 6. Cultural capital will be addressed in each year group through children engaging in modules which explore different aspects of French life, for example, investigating what school and home life is like in France and exploring the wider notion of the French speaking world.
